Description

Are you a new teacher looking to understand and apply proven teaching methods? Or, are you an experienced teacher and looking to improve and update your teaching skills?

In this five-part Instructional Effectiveness webinar series, you will learn how to organize effective lessons, check for understanding, motivate learners and ensure transfer and retention of learning.

This webinar series will:

  • Help beginning teachers acquire new skills and understandings that have been used extensively in classrooms and have proven to be effective
  • Give additional information to experienced teachers who are looking for different ways of organizing their lessons and managing the learning process
  • Teach alternative ways of engaging students and finding efficient and effective methods of checking for understanding, guiding practice, motivating learners, and ensuring transfer and retention of learning

Each session will be approximately 75-90 minutes, followed by a 30-minute Q&A period. Participants will receive eBooks that complement the webinars, and certificates for their professional development portfolios. Recordings will be available if participants miss the live webinars.  You can choose to register for the entire series (held Thursday evenings) or register for an individual webinar.

Session 1: Instructional Effectiveness

TBD (7:30 – 9:00 PM EST)

This is the foundational course for this 5 part webinar series. It will give you an overview of effective instruction – at any level or grade. You will:

  • Learn how to systemize your nightly preparation using lesson planning templates
  • Build time-saving strategies to increase learning time for students
  • Understand how to measure student comprehension of learning goals

Session 2: Five Teaching Behaviours to Motivate Students to Learn

TBD  (7:30 – 9:00 PM EST)

We’ve all read Maslow, Porter and Herzberg – now it’s time to bring classical motivation theories into the classroom. This webinar will assist you in using five key teaching behaviours that will help motivate even the most reluctant of learners.  You will:

  • Understand the importance of altering continuously, the “level of concern” as a motivational tool
  • Build feeling tone into group and individual interactions
  • Use students’ results as a motivating factor
  • Learn ways to make mundane topics interesting for students

Session 3: Anticipatory Set and Checking for Understanding

TBD (7:30 – 9:00 EST)

In this webinar, you will learn how to help students enter a “learning frame of mind” faster.  In addition, using techniques for checking for understanding will increase the likelihood of proper practice on assignments and homework.  You will:

  • Learn how to use the first five minutes of a class to capture creatively students’ interest, gauge prior knowledge and check back on past learning
  • Develop strategies for checking on struggling learners without embarrassing them
  • Learn how to decide when it’s time for a summative test or assignment – and when it’s not

Session 4: Teaching for Transfer & Retention

TBD (7:30 – 9:00 EST)

While many agree that school curricula have become excessively divided into subjects that many students see as unrelated, teachers can – and should – find ways to help students make connections in learning.   Meanwhile, teachers often get discouraged when students don’t remember what was taught in previous days, weeks or months. The answer is teaching for retention. In this webinar, you will:

  • Learn how to develop strategies to help students with the transfer of knowledge among subjects to enhance understanding,
  • Recognize the importance of instructional methods and evaluation processes (not only content) in learning transfer
  • Learn how to develop techniques that will help enhance students’ retention without costing you much time and effort, and how to avoid those that cause “negative” transfer – the blockers

Session 5: Planning Your Blackboard & Student Notebook Entries

TBD (7:30 – 9:00 PM EST)

Want a surprise? After a lesson with extensive blackboard use, take an image and don’t look at it for a month.  The day before a big test, look at the image. What you have written on the board is likely what students have written down in their notebooks.  Does this support what you have taught, and what you are testing on?  You may not even be able to figure it out yourself!

What you write on your blackboard matters.  It directs students how and where to focus their attention.  This can have a major impact on their learning.  In this webinar you will:

  • Discover templates and techniques that will help you use the board as a genuine vehicle for information recording and recall
  • Understand the importance of placement, size and relationship of terms in the visual organization of material
  • Learn how to integrate board planning into lesson planning

Dan and Jen are so generous to allow us to see, hear and read all the information.  This series was like being with friends.  But friends who never judge and always hope the best for you!  Found myself looking forward to our weekly sessions.  Thank you!

Thank you for an informative and encouraging series! I found so much value in all the knowledge and strategies you shared with us, and it is already helping me prepare for my teaching career.  I found this series more valuable than the sum of what I learned in my BEd program.
